Art competition for 38th Annual Mainsail Art Festival

St. Petersburg, Florida -- Student artists in grades K-12 are invited to compete for a chance to exhibit their artwork at the 38th Annual Mainsail Art Festival.

The festival will take place on April 20-21, 2013 in downtown St. Petersburg. The Young at Art Student Competition has been a part of Mainsail for 11 years and is a juried exhibition open to all public and private school students in Pinellas County.

Palm Harbor, Florida -- The Palm Harbor University High School's Theatre production of Stephen Sondheim's Into The Woods has been selected to be presented as a Mainstage production at the Florida Thespian Conference in Tampa on March 22, and their a cappella group, The After School Specials, will be representing the Southeast region at the ICHSA Finals in New York City on April 19

"Spongers" beat out in mascot contest

Tarpon Springs, Florida -- Apparently "sponger" isn't as odd a name for a mascot as some people may think.

The mascot for Tarpon Springs High School--the Sponger--failed to get enough votes to advance in USA Today High School Sports search for the best mascot.

USA Today HSS picked five schools from each state and the District of Columbia for the contest.  The Spongers from Tarpon Springs were beat out by the Key West Conchs.  That school will now compete regionally.

Dunedin Highland Middle students win regional math competition

Dunedin, Florida -- Students from Dunedin Highland Middle School won first place in the overall team and team ciphering competitions at the regional MATHCOUNTS Competition. Dunedin Highland Middle also won five out of the ten top spots at last month’s competition.

On March 15, the Dunedin Highland team will travel to Orlando where they will participate in the state competition. The winner of that competition will head to Washington, DC for the May 10 National event, which will be aired live on ESPN 3.

Osceola Middle teacher is America's 'Most Hilarious Teacher'

Seminole, Florida -- Pinellas County Schools says on Monday, March 4, ABC's The View named Mike Rivera, a civics teacher Osceola Middle School, as the county's Most HIlarious Teacher. 

After a nationwide search, Rivera was selected as finalist and was sent to New York last week to perform a comedy act for the show in front of contest judges.

Rivera competed against teachers from Toronto; Staten Island, N.Y.; Canton, Ohio; and Hamtrack, Michigan.

Pinellas County, Florida -- Pinellas County Supervisor of Elections Nancy Whitlock has announced the deadline to apply for a statewide scholarship available to certain college juniors and seniors is March 18.

If you are a college junior or senior majoring in political science, public administration or business administration, journalism or mass communications at an accredited Florida college, you may be eligible for a scholarship!
