pTEC cosmetology program offers half-price sale on services

PInellas County, FL -- The cosmetology program at pTEC Clearwater is offering 50 percent discount on cosmetology services from Monday, June 13 through Tuesday, July 26.  

All work is performed by students under the supervision of a staff instructor. Some services offered are haircuts, styling, perms, facials and nail services.

Morning and afternoon hours are available. Clients must be at least 16 years old with a photo ID.

The mission of the cosmetology class is to give students the competencies to pass the state board examination and to develop national workplace competencies to fill the needs of business and industry.

Zero percent home loans help residents prepare for hurricanes

Pinellas County, FL -- Pinellas County may be able to assist qualified homeowners with a zero percent interest loan to prepare their homes for hurricane season.  

The maximum loan is $20,000 amortized for up to 20 years.  Eligible improvements are roofs, windows, doors and more.

A $2,000 grant is also available to assist disabled homeowners in the removal of barriers and to add features that will make their homes easier to navigate.  Improvements may include the addition of wheelchair ramps, grab bars in bathrooms and equipment for the hearing impaired.  

“These programs are instrumental in helping residents improve their homes and enhance their neighborhood. As we move into hurricane season, many of the improvements may help homeowners mitigate storm damage,” Anthony M. Jones, director of Pinellas County Community Development said in a release.

Treasure Island -- The City of Treasure Island's Children's Summer Camp will be held from June 13 through August 19 for children, 5-13 years of age.

Program hours are from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday with extended care provided before and after camp for an additional fee. Family discounts are available for registration fees.

Registration will be held in the City Hall Recreation Department located at 120 108th Avenue from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Treasure Island -- Golf and Tennis Camps for juniors ages five years of age and older will be held at the Treasure Bay Golf and Tennis facility located at 10315 Paradise Boulevard, Treasure Island.

Camps will be held Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. until noon from June 13 through August 19, 2011.

Oldsmar, FL -- If you've opened your mailbox recently, you've probably noticed it's wedding season with all those invites. Brides on a budget swarmed a Goodwill superstore in search of a good deal on a dress.

Allyson McNutt waited in line for about two hours. She was among the crowd gathered outside an Oldsmar Goodwill well before dawn hoping to be one of the first to find the perfect wedding gown at the Wedding Gown Gala.

Prices started at $90 for dresses that would have cost more than $4,600 at retail. Bay area boutiques donated the name brand gowns.

There's another event next weekend in Ocala. Proceeds from both events will benefit Goodwill-Suncoast's training programs for people who have developmental disabilities.

Fashion Flocks to St. Pete Pier

St. Petersburg, Florida -- This Saturday night, June 4, fashion will take over the St. Pete Pier for a fashion show and shopper's bazaar from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.

"Fashion on the Pier" is production of LocalShops1, a 3-year-old coalition of local businesses.

The June 4 event will feature locally-inspired clothing, jewelry, and accesories. 

Free appetizers will be available as will a cash bar.

Admission is $20 in advance and $25 at the door. 

Proceeds benefit the Pinellas Chapter of the Warren Backpack Foundation, an organization that helps to feed low-income children.

The sale will include all gently-used merchandise, including men's and women's clothing, household items, art, ceramics, glassware, collectables, books and jewelry.
 
Thrift shop sales help provide scholarships for those in the community with financial need so that they can participate in Palm Harbor Parks & Recreation programs.
