St. Petersburg, Florida -- This Sunday, Dec. 30, the public is invited to visit with the animals from Tampa's Lowry Park Zoo outside The Mahaffey Theater, on the Plaza, from 1 - 2:30 p.m. Sunday.

Zoo ambassadors will have the animals on hand on the Plaza before Jungle Jack Hanna's Into the Wild Live show at 3 p.m.

Owl at McGough Nature Park finally gets a name

Largo, Florida -- Largo Nature Parks has announced the name of the new female Great Horned Owl at the George C. McGough Nature Park.

Eleanor was one of five names the Friends of the Largo Nature Park selected and many members of the community logged on the Largo Nature Parks website to vote. Eleanor now shares a cage with Franklin, the other Great Horned Owl at the nature park.

Together, they will make a truly fascinating pair. Opportunities are available for visitors to make personalized donations to help support the bird of their choice at the park.

Clearwater Beach, Florida -- The Clearwater Marine Aquarium has scheduled a seminar at the beach library to explain its work with the rescue, rehabilitation and release of dolphins, sea turtles and other marine animals.

The session is scheduled for Tuesday, Dec. 4 at 1:30 p.m.

Palm Harbor, Florida -- Florida EagleWatch says Bald Eagles are calling the Palm Harbor area home. there are four nests in the East Lake area, the most visible is in John Chestnut Park in Palm Harbor. You can actually even see it from East Lake Road.

If you're going north, take a look to your left when you pass by the fire station and Montessori school. Look for the tallest tree and you'll see the nest. The tree is dead because it was hit by lightning a while ago.

Volunteers needed for Birds of Prey program

Largo, Florida -- The George C. McGough Nature Park is looking for qualified individuals to assist in the maintenance, care, and handling of our two Great Horned Owls, a Barred Owl, and a Red Shouldered Hawk.

Volunteers will be required to go through a training program on proper animal care techniques prior to working with these birds of prey.

Loggerhead turtle released on North Beach

Clearwater Beach, Florida - A rehabilitated loggerhead sea turtle, found emaciated and unable to dive well off Honeymoon Island last June, was returned to the gulf Tuesday morning.

The Clearwater Marine Aquarium says the turtle, named Drew, weighed 105 pounds when rescued, now weighs 135 pounds and has overcome her buoyancy problem.

"Clearwater Marine Aquarium's Sea Turtle team has had a very busy year," according to spokesperson Krista Rosado. "The team located a record-breaking 200 nests on 26 miles of patrolled Pinellas County beaches."
