Pinellas County Tax Collector offices will feature the Protect Wild Dolphins license  plate in September, part of a campaign to promote a series of oceanic license plates available to Florida motorists. The promotion of the dolphin license plate coincides with the Sept. 23 release of the movie “Dolphin Tale,” which was filmed at the Clearwater Marine Aquarium.

Anyone who purchases or renews the Protect Wild Dolphins plate – or plates for Protect Florida Whales, Save Our Seas or Florida Aquaculture –  will receive a complimentary pass to the Clearwater Marine Aquarium.

City, CMA staff to work on Harborview space for Winter

Clearwater, Florida - City staff will work with the Clearwater Marine Aquarium to see whether the home of Winter the amputee dolphin can use part of the Harborview Center, the city council decided Thursday night.

The aquarium is in the middle of an expansion program and the feature film about Winter hits theaters next month. CMA is concerned there will not be enough parking and exhibit space to meet the visitor demand they expect in the wake of the movie's publicity.

The aquarium wants to use a portion of the Harborview Center for perhaps two years.

Sea turtle nests hatch on Sand Key

Sea turtle nests hatch on Sand Key

Clearwater, Florida  – Loggerhead hatchlings made their way to the water this week on Sand Key Beach, marking the beginning of an important time at Clearwater Marine Aquarium (CMA). Staff and volunteers have located 60 nests so far this season, which is up from 44 nests last year at this time. The first nest hatched on July 14 last year.

Over 200 volunteers help with the nesting program. These volunteers act as guides monitoring the nests each night as they approach the end of their incubation period. Once the hatchlings make their way out of the shell they head toward the water using the light of the moon as a guide.

Just the presence of humans keeps scavenging animals away, giving the little turtles a better chance at making it to the water. Once they reach the water they are on their own and approximately 1 in 1,000 of those will make it to adulthood.

Armadillo and dog face off for the second time

Armadillo and dog face off for the second time

Safety Harbor, Florida --  Just like most Floridians , the nine-banded armadillo (Dasypus novemcinctus) is not native to Florida.

With no natural predators other than an occasional coyote, bob cat, or automobile, the armored animal has thrived.

Lately, a whole group of them have thrived near Michelle Lynch's home in Safety Harbor.

"It's a very serious problem. They are causing a nuisance in my life," she told 10 News.

She says she had her first run in with the creatures about six months ago when her Yorkie Gus took off after one of them and had a bit of tussle.

On Monday night, she says it happened again.
