The Mystery of Pinkey Brady and the Buried Headstone

The Mystery of Pinkey Brady and the Buried Headstone

Gulfport, Florida -- As thunder and lightning raged in Gulfport Monday night, a giant laurel oak surrendered its secrets in Lincoln Cemetery. Tuesday morning, city workers and the mayor noticed something protruding from inside the trunk: a headstone dating from the late 1940s.

After enhancing the photo with imaging software, it appears the first worn line of the stone – which is not marble – reads simply “At Rest”, while the second line identifies “Pinkey Brady”. The most obscured line, the third, shows a birthdate in the late 1880s and a date of death of 1948 or 1947.

Since the police responded to a June 6 call about a couple removing a duck from Tomlinson Park, the Pekin duck count went from one to seven at press time. The pond also has three “marbled” ducks (brown and white, also called Buffs).
